Stuttering is a speech disorder. Fortunately, someone can help even if there is no permanent cure and this person is known as a Speech Language Pathologist or SLP.
This professional is educated in the study of human communication, its development and the various disorders so they know how to help a patient. They hold a master's degree under their belt and must pass a state certification or licensure exam in order to practice as well as a certificate from the ASHA or American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. If the doctor is not around, a speech assistant can help out.
From my personal experience of speech therapy I have to admit that I do not have anything positive to report back. The speech therapists themselves were very nice and educated people however their therapy did not prove to be of use to me. To put it quite simply, I attended speech therapy for fourteen years and by the end of that period the stutter had not improved, in fact it had become even worse.
The treatment methods vary according to the level of the ailment and may range from simple sign language to the usage of severity of the picture codes. Several tools are used for the evaluation of the speech of the toddlers, youth and the elderly. The involvement of the physical exercises may also be included in the treatment plan. Recurring practice and workout of the respective exercise is required. Other than that the employment of aural and imagery supports is common in addition to the prologue of different approaches that are used for the facilitation of practical communication.
Today all it takes is a quick search on one of the major search engines such as Google, MSN or Yahoo for keywords like stuttering cure, stuttering therapy, stuttering treatment, stammering therapy or cure for stammering, and you will find a ton of valuable information on all your potential options. Now I did not have this option available to me in those days, all I could do was take more speech therapy classes.
There are now many more stuttering therapy options available to people. These include attending one-to-one and group speech courses, some of which are run by people who have managed to overcome their own stutter. There are also self-help alternatives for people who feel that they do not have the confidence to attend any form of speech course
There are 3 basic categories of stuttering and the second and third category will need the help of a professional because you don't have the expertise to do this on your own.
Some parents wait several months before doing anything but you don't have to wait that long. You can do a simple test by observing your child for ten minutes when he or she is very talkative. If the child stutters more than three times and there is a history of this in the family then you need to seek the help of a speech language pathologist.
